Irate mourners eject Gov Malombe from Kitui ex mayor's burial

“Malombe was ejected out of the venue, he fled with members of the public giving him a chase”, said advocate Kimuli, adding, “One would say it was a deserving dishonour to a man who lacked proper judgement. The family will file formal complaints against the Governor's criminal conduct."

Kitui Governor Julius Malombe was today ejected out of the burial of former Kitui Mayor, Martha Mwangangi. His arrival at the Mwembe Tayari Village caused an unprecedented tension and immediately disrupted the programme as mourners protested his presence. Despite a heavy presence of security personnel, the mourners were undeterred in their demand that he leaves the burial. The late Mwangangi’s family had also written to Dr Malombe notifying him that he was not welcome at the funeral following circumstances that led to her death.

“His sight alone would cause tempers to flare and that is really what happened. Commotion ensued, as thousands of mourners demanded that he leave the venue. He stayed put and that is mourners became unmanageable despite the heavy presence of police”, said Moriss Kimuli of M. M Kimuli and Company Advocates who has declared to contest the Kitui Central parliamentary seat in 2017.

Dr Malombe arrived at the home when funeral ceremonies were already on, causing commotion. The family decided to move the body of the late Mwangangi from the shade where mourners were viewed it into the house. However, the governor tried to force his way into the house as well, forcing family members to lock the entrance to the house, our sources reported.

As Dr Malombe and county government officials who accompanied him started shaking the gate, mourners ran helter skelter as the governor's opponents started throwing stones forcing police officers who were in combat gear to cock their guns. “It was an ugly sight. At last, Malombe was ejected out of the venue, he fled with members of the public giving him a chase”, said advocate Kimuli, adding, “One would say it was a deserving dishonour to a man who lacked proper judgement. The family will file formal complaints against the Governor's criminal conduct. We have all the makings of a private prosecution”.

Two gubernatorial aspirants challenging Dr Malombe's re-election, Senator David Musila and Former Lands Cabinet Minister Charity Ngilu, joined family members in the ceremonies in returning the body to the House as chaos erupted. Others who entered the house included Kitui Rural MP Charles Nyamai and Kitui Central MP Benson Makali Mulu.

The former mayor was run over by a county fire extinguisher truck during demonstration by small scale traders whose structures had been flattened by the county government.
