Nine people were killed in a road accident in Mbooni West Sub County along Kikima-Tawa road involving a Nissan Matatu yesterday. Thirteen others have been admitted in local hospitals for treatment including Wote Level 4 Hospital.

Area police boss James Barasa said the accident occurred after a tyre burst which caused the overspeeding matatu lose control and veer off the road before rolling severally. “This matatu was travelling from Kikima to Machakos and after the tyre burst along Nzaini and Kalawani markets, it plunged into a gully killing nine people on the spot,” he said.

Barasa revealed the matatu was overloaded and overspeeding before the accident happened. Daniel Makosi, a retired teacher at Nthaani Primary School revealed that one of his neighbors was one of the casualties. "It deeply pains me for losing Beth my neighbor who was travelling in that matatu," he said.

Kikima residents alleged matatus have been overloading passengers especially during Christmas time when many people were travelling. "It is not clear how matatus can be leaving Kikima town overloaded yet there are roadblocks all over," said a source from Kikima.

Relatives of the accident survivors flocked Mbooni Sun County Hospital and Tawa Hospital to establish the fate of their loved ones. Others have been taken to Wote Level 4 Hospital for further attention. Drivers have been asked to drive safely and observe traffic rules especially during this festive season.
