Former Kitui mayor Martha Mwangangi has been killed while gubernatorial aspirant Charity Ngilu escaped death narrowly as violence rocked Kitui Town this monring. The former mayor was run over by a county fire extinguisher truck. Reports also indicated that Kitui Central MP Makali Mulu was roughed up by the demonstrating traders who were chanting anti slogans against Governor Julius Malombe’s administration, which they accused of ordering for the demolition of their business premises.

By midday, tension remained high in the town as Kitui County security personnel (askaris) battled traders demonstrating after their business premises such as stalls and wayside kiosks were flattened last night in a government crackdown on illegal buildings. Ms Ngilu and the late mayor were reportedly siding with the demonstrators who had blocked the Nairobi-Kitui road and lit bonefires. It was during the confrontation that a fire engine lorry crashed the mayor to death.

“Charity Ngilu in narrow escape as ex Kitui Mayor Martha Mwangangi is crushed to death by fire engine in ongoing Kitui riots. Tension is high”, journalist Martin Masai, who works for Ms Ngilu’s Mbaitu FM radio station, wrote on Facebook. “Kitui is burning….Former Mayor Martha Mwangangi killed after being run-over by a county fire extinguisher”, said another post on WhatsApp linking residents of the county. “Let’s mourn the former Mayor Martha… That’s a brutal death to a true servant of the people”, said yet another social media posting.

Other reports indicated that Ms Mwangangi was killed during the demonstration which was organized by Ms Ngilu in the town. “Ngilu and Mwangangi were holding hands when the speeding fire engine truck appeared. Her bodyguard shoved her as the truck swept off the ex-mayor and sped-off”, said another witness account.

The two had addressed the demonstrating traders who had paralyzed the road. Ngilu is battling out with the incumbent and Senator David Musila for the Kitui gubernatorial seat in the 2017 general election.
