The First Lady of Siaya County, Mrs Rosella Rasanga, said yesterday that too much empowerment of the girl child could have negative consequences for the male child in families of the future.

Speaking at Siaya ATC during a workshop that sensitized the youths on gender and cultural issues, the first lady said that efforts to empower the girl child has led to a new phenomenon where society is breeding  strong women and weak males.

“There is evident disconnect between what we aim to achieve and the results on the ground. Girls are taking leading roles in families while men are increasingly taking a back seat,” she said.

Rosella said the phenomenon has resulted in increasing drug abuse by young men as some parents put emphasis on the development of the girl child.

Rosella advised the youths to seize the opportunity of 30% rights to tenders offered by the County government in a bid to engage in viable economic activities to uplift their lives.

She was accompanied during the one day workshop by Jack Owuor a youth mentor coordinator among others.
