Nandi County will construct an ultra-modern Sh500 million new County Assembly Chambers. This follows the unanimous endorsement of the project by the county assembly having been deferred for the last three financial years due to financial constraints.
The assembly clerk Barnabas Kosgei said the contractor is expected at the site as soon the funds are released following the approval by the MCAs.
According to the architectural design, the modern facility would be more spacious with an expanded public gallery and the office of the speaker.
The new facility is also expected to have a gymnasium, a restaurant, Library, Media hall and an ICT center. The modern County Assembly will also have a parking bay and a chamber with a capacity of 72 representatives.
The current County Assembly which previously served during the defunct Nandi Council is too small therefore being congested.
The funds for the construction of the new assembly have been factored in the current 2016/17 budget and its construction is set to kick off before the end of the year, according to Kosgei.
Mr. Micah Cheserem, the chairman of the commission on revenue allocation toured the assembly chambers and agreed with the proposal to have the facility expanded.
The new project will be a five storey building to be constructed within the existing compound, said Mr. Kosgei. “It will give a facelift to the current assembly in Kapsabet,” Kosgei said on Sunday when he spoke to the media.
