Wajir East parliamentary candidate Rashid Kassim Amin alis RK was cleared early today by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, marking the start of a tough race in which the candidate is expected to triumph.
At the IEBC centre at Wajir High School, RK was accompanied by his supporters in a convoy that had dozens of vehicles. The supporters sang songs in praise of their man and every now and again chants of RK! RK! RK! rented the air.
Immediately he received the clearance latter from the IEBC, RK addressed his supporters outside the school and expressed his gratitude to the electorate of Wajir East for showing him solidarity. He promised to work for the people if elected without any discrimination based on their political differences or ethnicity.
The candidate acknowledged the tough battle ahead, saying that, Wajir East being a cosmopolitan constituency, there were several interests a leader must cater to and take care of in both the campaigns and once in office. "With the help of God and with my able leadership, I will ensure I will bring change here," he said.
RK promised to be at the frontline in addressing the constituency's problems, saying he will not lead from the behind as has been the case with current leaders who were unable to provide direction on some of the pressing developmental challenges in the region. He said he would delegate powers to some supporters once he's elected to the National Assembly.
RK is running for the seat for the third time. In 2013, he was the second person but lost to incumbent Abass Sheik. A holder of of a Bachelor of Science degree in animal production, he served in different capacities in government sector and private sector, among them the Ministry of Agriculture for several years. Before he joined politics in 2013, he had been the managing director for Ewaso Nyiro Development Authority.
His main agenda for leadership in Wajir East is to expand education. In fact, he has called for free secondary education for all students in Wajir East, promising to establish a fund for their sustenance.
He also wants to establish permanent irrigation systems in the constituency, and to invest in programmes to promote economic capacities of the youth, women and the marginalised including people living with disability.
A member of the Wiper Democratic Party, RK is a strong supporter of the NASA coalition and is spearheading campaigns for the NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga.
The candidate believes strongly in the egalitarian agenda of the opposition, saying Mr Odinga would serve all Kenyans equally if he was elected, in addition to supporting devolution and creating more jobs throughout the country.
