Nyali MP Hezron Awiti has received the blessings of the Legio Maria Church. The MP attended a major event at the St Marys church of Legio Maria, Likoni, on Sunday, where he received the head of the church, “Pope” Raphael Otieno.

The “pope” took the opportunity to bless Awiti's candidacy for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat in the 2017 elections. Pope Otieno and other members of the church praised Awiti’s leadership and endorsed his campaign for the 2017 gubernatorial race.

At the same time, the MP has condemned the recent circulation of leaflets in the area warning members of the Luo community against increased participation in Mombasa politics.

Police are investigating the source of the leaftlets, which advised county assembly speaker, Thadeus Rajwayi (a Luo), and majority leader Abdalla Kasagamba (a Mdigo) to resign from office, failure of which they would be beheaded.

The leaflets accused the two leaders of undermining Governor Hassan Joho. However, the governor is very well entrenched in Mombasa politics, and it is unlikely that his agents would resort to using leaflets against his political opponents.

“Anyone who thinks he can intimidate the peace-loving citizens has failed, we will make sure they have been charged with hate speech,” said Awiti.
