Omar Abdi Gabay, who comes from the same clan as incumbent Garissa Governor Nathif Jama, has withdrawn his candidature and announced that he will support Mr Jama's re-election, boosting the governor's campaign at a time that his main opponent Ali Korane is growing strong in popularity.
"I do hereby withdraw my candidature to contest for the Garissa gubernatorial seat in respect and on behalf of my elder brother who is also the governor of Garissa County His Excellency Nathif Jama. Today Monday 17 April 2017 puts an end to all the propaganda, confusion and the imagined bad blood between me and my elder brother Nathif," he said.
The governor today hosted a delegation of elders from the Rer Ali sub clan of the larger Awliyahan clan at his residence in Garissa where the opponent made the announcement. The elders were led by Awliyahan community Ugaas Hamut Sheak, Sagale Abdi Hilowle and Omar Abdi Gabey, who used the meeting to announce his withdrawal from the contest.
"I have had a strong belief to contest for this seat but I have never on any day thought of turning against my brother Nathif, and were it to happen I would have lost my interest than blocking my brother's interest. Nathif has always helped me, he has always been my brother and I will support him no matter what", said Mr Gabay, who declared that the Rer Ali clan would fully suppport the governor all the way to the election.
The two leaders embranced after the discussion and Governor Nathif praised Mr Gabay as a resourceful team player whom he credited with playing a significant role in his successful campaign for the seat in 2013.
