A candidate for Machakos women representative has denied reports doing rounds on social media that she had been appointed to be Governor Alfred Mutua's running mate in the upcoming general elections. Ms Rita Ndunge Ndunda, who is running on the governor's Maendeleo Chap Chap (MCC), said the reports were part of a campaign by her detractors to sow confusion among her supporters.

In a press statement released this evening, the aspirant said her campaign to become the Machakos women representative was on course and that she had no interest in any other position. "The rumours are unfounded and are part of a malicious campaign by my political opponents to cause confusion among my supporters and possibly distract us from our campaign to bring change to women representation in Machakos," she said.

She added: "I would like to state clearly that I am firmly in the race for Women Representative and have no interest in any other position. I therefore appeal to my supporters to stay focused on our journey and to ignore the false and cheap propaganda about my being deputy governorship candidate."

In a subsequent interview with this website, the aspirant said she had been out in the grassroots most of the day and only came to learn about the rumours alleging that she had been appointed as Governor Mutua's running mate in the evening - by which time the rumours had been shared on Facebook, WhatsApp and other social media platforms.

Ms Ndunda informed this correspondent that she had in Muthetheni in Mwala Sub County attending the anniversary of famous gospel singer Margaret Mutunga, and that after the event, she found numerous congratulatory messages on text and WhatsApp.

She has urged her supporters not to be swayed by the rumours about her being the governorship candidate and concentrate on her campaign to become the Women Representative. Her main challenger is the incumbent Dr Susan Musyoka.

PRESS STATEMENT BY MACHAKOS WOMEN REP ASPIRANT

I would like to correct rumours that have been doing the rounds on social media platforms since this morning indicating that I have been appointed as Governor Alfred Mutua’s running mate in the upcoming general elections.

Having been out in the grassroots most of the day, I have only come to learn about these rumours which have been shared on Facebook, WhatsApp and other social media platforms. The rumours are unfounded and are part of a malicious campaign by my political opponents to cause confusion among my supporters and possibly distract us from our campaign to bring change to women representation in Machakos.

I would like to state clearly that I am firmly in the race for Women Representative and have no interest in any other position. I therefore appeal to my supporters to stay focused on our journey and to ignore the false and cheap propaganda about my being deputy governorship candidate.

Let me also take this opportunity to pay tribute to all my sisters and brothers from Machakos who have rallied to our campaign – knocking on doors and persuading friends and relatives to support us. It is due to your efforts that we have reached where we are, and I promise to continue our journey towards a better Machakos.

With people hungering for a new kind of women leadership in Machakos, I believe that victory will be ours if we can maintain the momentum we now have.

Thank you all and may God bless you.

Rita Ndunge Ndunda,
Candidate for Machakos Women Representative
