Police in Yatta Sub County in Machakos have re-arrested one of the six suspects who last week escaped from a police truck while on transit from Machakos GK Prison to Kangundo Police Station. Yatta OCPD Edward Changach confirmed that the escapee, identified as John Mutunga Mueni, was nabbed inside a local bar at Matuu Town along the Thika-Garissa highway Monday night.

"After a tip-off from some members of the public, we managed to nab one John Mutunga Mueni, a suspect of robbery with violence who was among remandees who escaped from lawful custody", he said. The arrest reduces to four the number of escapees still at large since one other escapee identified as Peter Maanzo was fatally shot during the incident.

Mr Mutunga was among the three suspects whose pictures were released by police to the public for possible identification. Kangundo OCPD Njeri Mbugua had identified names of suspects who had escaped as Geoffrey Nyamari Juma, Martin Odhiambo, James Makau Munyao and John Mutunga (now rearrested)-all facing charges of robbery with violence.

Others were James Kioko Mutisya and Peter Maanzo who had been charged with stealing. Ms Mbugua said police had made good progress in tracking down the escapees and urged members of the public to volunteer information that may help to re-arrest others who are at large.
