President Uhuru Kenyatta’s closest ally from the Coast region in the 2013 election Chirau Ali Mwakwere today officially joined ODM and was received by party leader Raila Odinga. The former cabinet minister and outgoing Kenya’s ambassador to Tanzania was escorted to Raila’s Capitol Hill offices by Mombasa Governor and ODM deputy leader Ali Hassan Joho, who is the party’s kingpin in the Coast region. Mr Mwakwere later joined Mr Odinga, Mr Joho and other party officials for a group photo.

The Kenya Free Press authoritatively reported Mr Mwakwere's then-impending defection on September 27, two and half months before it was officially announced. Mr Mwakwere hopes to vie for ODM ticket for the Kwale gubernatorial position following the defection of Governor Salim Mvurya to Jubilee. Sources close to the former minister had intimated to us his resolution to decamp to ODM.
