CORD presidential candidate and Wiper Party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has released the schedule of his countrywide meet the people tours to popularize his bid to wrestle the presidency from Uhuru Kenyatta in the 2017 general elections.
The four-week campaign blitz commences on Wednesday September 28 when the former Vice President will address a rally at Garsen Stadium in Tana River County. Tana River governor Hussein Dado is a member of the Wiper Party and therefore the tour is to solidify the party’s following in the area.
Governor Dado has remained loyal to the party and recently declined to be swayed by Jubilee Party when the governing coalition lured opposition defectors from the Coast region, among them Kwale governor Salim Mvurya and his Lamu counterpart Issa Timani.
The former VP will stay in the Coast region till the weekend when he will be hosted by Wiper Secretary General and Mombasa Senator Omar Hassan in Mombasa for two days. The Senator is expected to play a major role in popularizing Kalonzo’s candidature in the region seen as an opposition zone.
The three CORD co-principals, Kalonzo, Raila Odinga (ODM) and Moses Wetangula (Ford-Kenya) have been endorsed by their respective parties as coalition’s Presidential candidates and are expected to square it out early next year to have one of them face President Kenyatta during the August 8, 2017 general elections.
From Mombasa, Kalonzo will travel to Nyanza region where he is scheduled to address rallies in Nyamira and Kisii counties between 9 and 11, October.
Wednesday October 12 has been set as the day to celebrate Kalonzo’s Award of African Dignitary Man of the Year 2016. The event will culminate in having a dinner at an undisclosed venue in Nairobi expected to be graced by CORD top leaders among others.
Kalonzo’s countrywide tours are expected to be concluded in Rift Valley where he is scheduled to visit Nandi County for two days between 18 and 19 October.
“We urge all our supporters and Kenyans of goodwill to come out in large numbers to welcome our party leader and 2017 presidential hopeful”, said Dr Jared Siso, the Wiper Executive Director.
The three CORD presidential candidates have intensified their campaigns as the clock ticks to the day the flag bearer would be picked. But the method to be used has remained unknown with a section of leaders saying a team of experts was working on modalities with others being of the view that the candidate would be agreed through consensus.
Plans are already at an advanced stage to have CORD registered as a corporate party where the affiliate parties will remain intact unlike the newly unveiled Jubilee Party where affiliate parties merged. JP is whose ticket President Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto will use to seek re-election next year.
