Mombasa Governor and ODM deputy party leader Ali Hassan Joho during his campaign yesterday.

Members of Luo Council of Elders have endorsed Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho's reelection bid. Led by chairman Obara Kings vowed to curse any member of the community who will not vote for Joho during August 8 elections.

They said their endorsement of Joho is based on his full backing of the NASA Presidential candidate Raila Odinga.

Meanwhile the council of elders from Isiolo has light a controversy after instructing gubernatorial candidates from the county to step down. The Borana council of elders had earlier claimed that the gubernatorial seat must be retained by their kinsman arguing that they are the majority in the County.

The council wants the aspirants to step down so as to allow the incumbent governor Godana Doyo to finish his second term. The decision has however been opposed by the aspirants who want the elders to let the people exercise their democratic right.

However the gubernatorial candidates who have been told to step down have vehemently opposed the Council of Elders decisions.

They include Abdul Bahari Ali of Jubilee and Adan Kabelo of ODM. Others are Dr Mohamed Kuti and Abdi Godana, Joseph Samal and Ms Lucy Mworia all Independent, but have rejected the elders’ endorsement of the sitting governor.

The elders’ chairman, Abdullahi Hajj Gonjobe said that the decision was reached to ensure that the Borana community retains the governor’s seat. This IS also meant to ensure that Borana votes are not divided.

However the Council of Elders decision was rebuked by Jubilee Party’s Presidential campaigner, Dr Abduba Sama and former chairman of Isiolo County Council Hussein Abduba who on Sunday, said the council of elders does not have mandate to endorse any candidate for any elective post.

Dr Sama who is the founder member of Borana Council of Elders said the current council members were in office illegally and cannot be recognized until fresh elections are held. He also added that the members have demonstrated that they are not there for the interest of the community but for a political leader who has failed to deliver services required of him and his administration.

The ODM’s Kabelo in rejection to Council of elders decision asked the elders to resolve problems affecting the residents as a result of the recent conflicts in areas between Kinna in Isiolo and Kiutine in Meru County instead of endorsing people who are already in the ballot papers.
