With a countdown leaves 55days remaining before the August 8, General Elections competitions seems to be getting tougher especially as the campaigns take a notch higher at the Counties. The Presidential contest has narrowed down to a two horse race pitting the incumbent, President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM party leader Raila Odinga who is National Super Alliance (NASA) candidate. The two are bracing for tough duel and are combing different parts of the country popularizing their candidature.

As regards to gubernatorial contest, focus is in Mombasa County, where NASA is fielding two candidates- incumbent governor Hassan Joho of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) with his running mate William Kingi and incumbent senator Hassan Omar of Wiper Democratic Movement-Kenya ticket together with his running mate Linda Mariwa Shuma. Jubilee Party is also banking on Suleiman Shahbal and his running mate Ananiah Mwaboza to dethrone Joho and Omar.

Governor Joho is campaigning and asking for support from the youths who he gave driving licenses after training in the county government while on the other hand Omar holds press conferences instead of campaign rallies. Mombasa County has a big number of gubernatorial candidates adding up to 7 including Daniel Kitsao (KADU-Asili), Vibrant Democratic Party led by the incumbent Member of Parliament for Nyali constituency Hezron Awiti and his running mate Hassan Mwatoa. Other parties fielding candidates include Maendeleo Chap Chap and UDP.

In Nairobi County the race pits the Dr Evans Kidero (ODM) and his deputy Jonathan Mueke (Wiper) representing NASA while Nairobi senator Mike Sonko and running mate Polycarp Igathe are for jubilee party. During an interview at Radio Citizen Senator Sonko said that Governor Kidero has failed in the development of the county. But Kidero who shared the same platform blamed Sonko for not working with him and added that the state owes the county a debt of 72M. Others eyeing the Nairobi Governor as Independents are former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth with his running mate Dr. Dan Shikanda, Miguna Miguna and his running mate Karen Wangenye.

In Kisumu County, the Country’s third largest city, the gubernatorial race pits four candidates including the incumbent Governor Jack Ranguma who is running as an Independent with his new running mate Ephraim Kananga after dropping his deputy Ruth Odinga. He lost the ODM nomination to Senator Pro. Anyang’ Nyong’o  who has named Mathews Owili as his running mate. Other candidates are representing ANC party and jubilee party.

However, campaigns in Kisumu are turning violent and last weekend Nyando MP Fred Outa running for senator seat on ODM was forcefully ejected out of a funeral event after being accused of interfering with ODM party nominations.
