Former cabinet minister John Mutua Katuku has switched from vying for a parliamentary seat and will try to wrest the Machakos senate seat from incumbent Johnstone Muthama. Surprisingly, Mr Muthama funded and supported Mr Katuku in 2013 when he was the gubernatorial running mate to former Kathiani MP Wavinya Ndeti who contested on Chama Cha Uzalendo (CCU) against Dr Alfred Mutua on Wiper Democratic Movement-Kenya.
In that race, Dr Mutua won and has since ditched Wiper and is seeking re-election on Maendeleo Chap Chap (MCC) party. Mr Katuku has parted ways with Ms Ndeti, who is again on the race for governorship. He will use his recently-formed Peoples’ Trust Party (PTP) of which he is the Party Leader.
The former Mwala MP, who served as minister for water and assistant minister for finance during retired President Mwai Kibaki’s regime, had previously announced that he would be defending the Parliamentary seat. He, however, made public the decision to go for the Senatorial seat this week, before the announcement went viral on social media.
Mr Katuku told this website, "Yes, it’s true I will be going for the senator Machakos County. But I will give details during a press conference at a later date and announce my agenda and campaign schedule”.
Also on the race for Machakos Senator is Carlos Kioko Henry who will fly the Maendeleo Chap Chap flag. He had previously announced that he would be vying on the Jubilee Party ticket. So far, no one has declared candidature on the ruling party ticket.
