Maendeleo Chap Chap (MCC) Party headed by Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua has become one of the small parties to watch following its inroads in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper zones. Within the last one month, MCC has gained popularity after it received defectors from Mt Kenya region, an area reserved for President Uhuru Kenyatta.
A senior catch from the area who ditched Jubilee for MCC on 2 February was the president’s former adviser on education, Dr Kilemi Mwiria. He said that he joined MCC because of its 'progressive agenda'. A few days later, Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti followed suit and quite Jubilee party to Maendeleo Chap Chap. He decamped with others including Embu Deputy Governor Dorothy Nditi, Mbeere North MP Muriuki Njagagua and 20 MCAs from the County.
And yesterday, Wiper nominated MP Bishop Robert Mutemi defected to MCC. Mutemi is aspiring for the seat of Mwingi West Parliamentary seat currently held by Bernard Kitungi. This decamping of leaders from other parties to MCC is a clear indication that the party may emerge as winner in various posts in the coming general elections and threatens the popularity of Kalonzo Musyoka seen as a front runner in the yet to be named opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) flag bearer.
Dr Mutua, who has declared to go for the presidency in 2022, is however supporting the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta in the August general elections. The governor is however facing a serious competition from his deputy Bernard Muia Kiala, who is seen as Wiper front-runner in the impeding primaries.
Former Kathiani MP Wavinya Ndeti of Chama Cha Uzalendo (CCU) is also on the race to remove him. There is pressure for the two unite against Dr Mutua with fears that if they go separate ways it might not be easy to dethrone Mutua. However, Dr Mutua has been blamed of being disloyal to Kalonzo by defecting from Wiper party which sponsored his election in 2013 and forming his own party.
He launched his party on 25 August 2016 at Nairobi Bomas of Kenya and said that his party will be registering new members from all the regions across the country to vie for various posts using MCC. He added that it’s only the presidential post his party will not be contesting for.
Recruiting of new members to Dr Mutua’s party may divide Ukambani region into two groups for it is a known fact that Wiper party dominates Ukambani region due to its loyal party supporters who are affiliated to it.
The grooming of this new party in Ukambani may however affect the direction voters will cast their votes with fears that Wiper may lose its popularity especially in Machakos county.
