SportPesa, Kenya’s most successful betting firm, has signed a multimillion sponsorship deal for the governing body for rugby in Kenya, the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU).

The Sh607 million deal is the largest sponsorship deal to be signed by the betting firm and is expected to run for a period of five years. They are also the current sponsors of the Kenya Premier League, Gor Mahia and AFC football clubs.

Speaking during the ceremony, SportPesa’s chief executive officer Ronald Karauri said that the deal will boost the youth who lack the exposure and opportunity to maximize their potential. He asserted that it will play a big role in helping steer our national teams to even greater heights internationally.

“This support will go a long way in enhancing the growth of the game at the development level while at the same time ensuring our national teams remain competitive at the international stage. We believe that at the end of the five years we will have groomed the next generation of rugby stars,” he said.

Kenya Rugby Union chairman Richard Omwela expressed his joy on the sponsorship deal and promised that every penny the union receives will be used prudently.

“We are pleased that the partnership touches on the very core of rugby development and sustainability. Kenya rugby is destined for rapid growth-something that ties in well with SportPesa’s ambition to steer the country to greater heights,” said Omwela.

The deal will cover the national teams including women’s rugby, 15 aside, the world-beating Kenya Sevens who are currently under the sponsorship of Kenya Airways, among others.
