I will be writing on health series in this online newspaper in order to share health information. Health is seen as absence of sickness. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has defined health as follows: A complete state of physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

For this reason I will write on individual health, which one may call self-health, family health, community health, environmental health, occupational health with safety component and eventually travelers health.

Today am focusing on holistic health

Holistic health (or holistic medicine) is a diverse field of alternative medicine in which the "whole person" is focused on, not just the malady itself. Holistic health upholds that all aspects of people's needs including psychological, physical and social should be taken into account and seen as a whole.

Holistic treatment  simply means  that a physician takes account of all a person's circumstances in giving treatment. Sometimes when alternative medicine is mixed with mainstream medicine the result is called "holistic" medicine, though this is more commonly termed integrative medicine

Integrative medicine, which is also called integrated medicine and integrative health in the United Kingdom, combines alternative medicine with evidence-based medicine. Practitioners claim that it treats the "whole person," focuses on wellness and health rather than on treating disease, and emphasizes the patient-physician relationship

Optimum  mental health is a level of psychological well-being, or an absence of a mental illness. It is the "psychological state of someone who is functioning at a satisfactory level of emotional and behavioral adjustment

Mental poisoning  manifests in tortured souls. Human beings, whose self-confidence and peace of mind have been torn to shreds by invisible darts—the evil thoughts of others. Can envy, hate, and jealousy be projected through space from the mind of another? Do poisoned thoughts like mysterious rays reach through the ethereal realm to claim innocent victims?

Will wishes and commands born in hate gather momentum and like an avalanche descend upon a helpless man or woman in a series of calamities? Must humanity remain at the mercy of evil influences created in the minds of the vicious? Millions each year are mentally poisoned—are you safe from this scourge? This was made clear by H. Spencer Lewis.

Paracelus, whose original name was Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, courted  controversy with his wholesale condemnation of traditional science and medicine.  Paracelsus's new concept of disease emphasized its causes to be external agents that attack the body, contrary to the traditional idea of disease as an internal upset of the balance of the body's humors (yellow bile, black bile, blood and phlegm).

Therapy, according to Paracelsus, was to be directed against these agents of disease, and for this he advocated the use of chemicals rather than herbs. Alchemy became the means of preparing such chemicals; in this way Paracelsus changed the emphasis of the alchemical art from chasing the elusive Elixir of Life or Philosopher's Stone, to making medicines. He is considered the Father of Modern Toxicology.

The Father of Occupational Medicine is Dr. Bernadino Rammazzini. He asserted that a physician must ascertain a patient's occupation. As many illnesses are  associated  with workplace conditions which, if well managed, could minimize such illnesses.

Ill health has its links with chemicals, physical, biological, mechanical and psycho-social issues.  Psycho-social issues being the leading cause.

Health issues are captured well in most famous ancient religious texts - the Holy Bible, Holy Quran, the Bhagavad Gita and others .

Individuals, families and even communities are vulnerable to sickness.Environmental factors could also be responsible for sickness. Likewise, workplaces also contribute to sickness .  Travelers get sick and could spread disease to other countries or places.

Public Health  is responsible for prevention of disease, promotion of health and prolongation of life through community efforts. One has to prevent what is evident, promote what can be realised and making one have many years to live in terms of quality and quantity – Add life to years and add years to life

Did you know that you are because we are and we are because you are? Health is wealth but wealth is not necessarily health. May you be empowered to control your health and life.

The next health series will be on individual health.
