KMA cancels Mailu, Muraguri membership as private doctors join strike

"In view of their role in the ongoing crisis and their crimes of omission and commission, KMA hereby revokes the membership of the two for one year," the association said in the statement issued after a meeting of its top decision-making board.

The Kenya Medical Association has cancelled the membership of Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu and his Principal Secretary Nicholas Muraguri for a year for "disgracing the organization". The Association, in a statement early today, also requested health workers' associations to support efforts for a comprehensive solution to the crisis.

"In view of their role in the ongoing crisis and their crimes of omission and commission, KMA hereby revokes the membership of the two for one year," the association said in the statement issued after a meeting of its top decision-making board.

The decision came on the heels of developments signifying an escalation of the paralysis in medical services. Doctors in Mombasa and Kisumu vowed to paralyze activities in private hospitals, which have been unaffected by the two-month long strike, for 48 hours to protest jailing of their union officials.

KMA is a professional association and though it also caters for its members' social welfare, it is the junior doctors who find its publication, networking and investment services. To the senior doctors at the apex of their career, the Association's cancellation of the membership is a symbolic admonishment that carries no punishment beyond the perception that the two officials are now in disrepute in their own profession.
