Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i yesterday declared that the government will vet representatives to parents and teachers associations to ensure that only genuine parents are elected to the boards.
Addressing the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association at Travellers Beach Hotel in Mombasa, Matiangi said there were currently many “consultant parents” leading the associations in schools.
He said a National Parents’ Forum will be constituted by July. He declared the Kenya National Association of Parents, which has been claiming to represent parents, an imposter organization.
“That brother of ours (referring to Ndunda) was running a totally different thing, that is not what is prescribed in the Basic Education Act,” said Matiang’i.
The National Parents Forum to be formed will start at the sub-county level, which will be constituted by the parents’ school committee and education officers at the sub counties.
“The chairs of the sub-counties forum will form the county level forum whereby the counties chair from all the 47 counties will make up the national forum,” he said.
The 47 delegates will meet in Nairobi on July 1, the minister said, and elect their leaders.
“We do not want consultant parents to be leaders of these forums. We want real parents, who have kids in schools,” said Matiang’i.
