Migori rivals Obado, Ayako have new fight: Who is more Jubilee mole than other

Migori Governor Okoth Obado and his failed challenger Ochilo Ayako have launched a propaganda campaign accusing each other of being the 'Jubilee mole' in the county. Mr Obado, who won the governorship in 2013 against a favoured ODM candidate, was labelled a Jubilee mole for years owing to his close association with deputy president William Ruto and other Jubilee leaders.

However, since winning the nomination against Mr Ayako in the just-concluded ODM primaries, the governor's team have turned the heat on Mr Ayako, who has vowed to contest the seat as an independent candidate in defiance of ODM's appeal that he concedes defeat to Mr Obado.

"By defecting from ODM, today Hon Ochilo Ayako has confirmed that he is more Jubilee than me," the governor said in reaction to Mr Ayako's announcement that he would run as an independent candidate despite appeals from ODM that he should accept defeat. Mr Obado in making the claim hopes to endear himself to the ODM base from which he has been an estranged since 2013 when he left the party after controverial primaries.

But that is the same constituency Mr Ayako targets. "I will present our case to our people and let them decide. I believe the people of Migori are being forced to accept a political arrangement where money decides everything and this is unacceptable," he said, but added the rider that he remains loyal to ODM leader Raila Odinga.

"I believe in Raila Odinga and will vote for Raila Odinga. And I urge all of you to do so. Let no one tell you otherwise," said the former cabinet minister, subtly digging in on Governor Obado's supporters who had threatened to mobilise in support of President Uhuru Kenyatta was their candidate to be denied the ODM ticket.
