Safaricom yesterday hosted its second Skiza Empowerment Forum at the Carnivore Gardens after a successful summit in Mombasa early last month.
Sylvia Mulinge, Director Consumer Business at the Carnivore Gardens Restaurant, said that skiza started in the year 2009, and it has seen 132,000 tunes downloaded in Skiza where 120,000 are from Kenya. The major reason to launch Skiza was to celebrate diversity of Kenyan music. She added that over 25 million of the safaricom customers download music from Skiza. Following the launch of Twaweza Forum, the artist can access the over 25 million customers concerning the Skiza tune downloaded.
In addition to an increase in earnings to the artists, safaricom has laid a Skiza platform where the artist can keep track of their income. By just dialing *622# or by visiting www.skiza.com the artist will have access to their revenue statements for the songs that they have signed up with the Content Service Providers.
Steve Chege, Director Corporate Affairs said that the Skiza forum is under a contract and so should the artist. “The artist should sign a contract with the suppliers and take a copy to the safaricom house. And if the contractor is not co-operative, it’s best you terminate the contract 6 months prior “he added.
Following the increase in Skiza earnings for Kenyan music artists, the non-musical tunes will also increase by 30 per cent and the artist will be receiving earnings every month, Franklin Ocharo the HoD of Products and Services added.
Through the new launched service *622#,it will help the artist by accessing monthly revenue report detailing the number of Skiza tunes and the revenue generated per song. This will be sent via email by the 5th day of every month. For the artist to access the portal, they are required to have their service PIN, and in case you have forgotten the PIN, you will just dial *622# and follow instructions.
The service will only be available to the artists who are safaricom subscribers. The system will be accessible to both the pre-pay and the post-pay subscribers.
