Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore.

The Communication Authority today announced that it was seeking an explanation from Safaricom over service outage experienced on the company's network early this morning. Safaricom's systems were down for more than an hour, with calls, text, data and M-Pesa services interrupted.

CA director general Francis Wangusi said the regulator was reviewing the cause of the service interruption and would take action on Safaricom if it finds that the problem arose from technical failure. "We are waiting to get an explanation on what happened. We should not have a communication breakdown in the country."

"If it was a deliberate move, we are going to take action," the director said during a press briefing at CA headquarters along Waiyaki Way.
